EP14| Alyssa – HBAC Cascade of interventions & 6 hour peaceful waterbirth

In this episode, we meet Alyssa Mum of two boys who is a huge VBAC advocate and supporter.

Alyssa had the classic cascade of interventions with her first birth after a healthy pregnancy and an all of a sudden push to induce her due to “high BMI and big baby card.

She was originally seeing her family GP for shared care who had never mentioned anything to her about her high BMI or “big baby” and unfortunately he was away from 37 weeks onwards and she received prenatal care from the hospital.

Following the recommendation, Alyssa went for the induction.

Two days of gel and on the third day, an artificial rupture of membranes and drip was given. There was some meconium staining.

After 16 hours of this process and 4 hours on the epidural with a posterior baby (that Alyssa was unaware of), she was told she had “failed to progress” past 5cms and went into an “emergency c-section”

The C section wasn’t a terrible experience but super clinical, she felt invisible and not involved.

Unfortunately her baby and mum left Alyssa in the theatre and she was alone the rest of surgery and recovery, which deeply upset & hurt Alyssa.

After attending a Birth Without Fear Conference homebirth ideas were planted and came to life.

Alyssa called & decided to meet with some homebirth midwives and settled on the perfect one for her.

She felt calm, confident and support for the rest of her pregnancy and ready to meet her newborn baby.

After all day cramping around the guess date Alyssa spent the day playing outside with her toddler and went about her day.

Only 6 hours later she had a wonderful waterbirth with her midwives present and her son arriving at 2:26 am.

Alyssa transferred to hospital three hours after birth because the bleeding hadn’t slowed down by the time the midwives would normally be leaving and she had a challenging experience in the hospital staying overnight for blood pressure monitoring.

Alyssa left the next day to return home with her new baby and family and enjoy the birthing high she had just experienced of birthing her baby supported in her home.
